PSYCHOTHERAPY OF AN 8-YEARS OLD BOY WITH SEVERE HABITUAL CONSTIPATIONS

In this article the author describes the process of psychotherapy of an 8-year-old boy with severe habitual constipations. The treatment consisted of working both with the boy and the parents. The author presents the mechanism of a vicious circle that used to function in the family, where fear and concentration on the symptom itself were causing even bigger stress connected with the subject, resulting in sustaining of the symptom, or even intensifying it. Significant in the process of understanding the symptom were issues of control and anger. Owing to the work with the system it was possible to make a change in the family, to cause the symptom to resign and to improve the emotional and social functioning of the child.
