ABSTRACT
Eating disorders are of complex aetiology. Disturbances of early relations with caregivers are one of its elements, resulting in later disordered affect regulation. The theories concerning disorders of affect regulation focus on alexithymia research. Thus a review of literature published in the years 1993-2005 on links between alexithymia and eating disorders was carried out. Eating disordered patients were more alexithymic than normal controls, though differences between them were only in the first and second factor of alexithymia. Alexithymia is a trait, however it may occur also as a state phenomenon. The theories of alexithymia aetiology require further research in which the theory of attachment may be a helpful perspective.
